Hedge knights are technically "the best" heavy melee in terms of potential but they're so, so expensive and having the right talents is uncommon enough that it's usually a waste of money. Squires are a bit better and only a little more expensive on average.

I just tend to avoid the ones carrying expensive equipment but I usually hire them if they're under 1k.
